French Trip 2003

Wednesday June 11th

After a leisurely breakfast the two groups got ready for the day. Coach A were to go sailing in the morning and shopping in the afternoon. Coach B did the reverse.

The sailors put on waterproof jackets and trousers and then life jackets over the top. There were groups of eight and twelve children. Each group got into their safety boat and sailed to the sailing boats. The instructors taught the children in 'franglais' what to do. There were either two or three people in a boat, depending on the size of the boat.

To start with the children sailed from flag to flag so that they could gain confidence. The morning sail was very calm and took place in the inner bay. The morning sailors then transferred back to the safety boat and had a tour of the harbour. They saw jellyfish in the water and limpets, barnacles and oysters on the harbour wall.

The afternoon sailors took the full benefit of the developing breeze and sailed out and around a light tower.

Both groups had the opportunity to shop at the Hypermarkets at some point in the day. Pocket money was spent and different things were bought; clothes, sweets, postcards, sweets, flip-flops and sweets.

This evening was spent by a short walk up through town to the sandy beach on the other side of town. Games were again played as well as a chance to relax and take in the beautiful setting sun.

Children's comments

Matthew "Today was really fun, I especially liked going out to the open sea although we capsized twice. This day has definitely been the best so far."

Beth "Great fun and worth getting soaked!"

Felicity "Today was great fun, it encouraged me to go sailing again."

Ciaran "I think Rowan and I did extremely well for our first time."

Getting kitted up in waterproofs and lifejackets.

On the way out of the harbour, in the safety boat.

Two salty sea dogs take to the high seas.

And so castles made of sand sink into the sea, eventually.
