French Trip 2003

Thursday June 12th

We began with a leisurely breakfast (are not all French breakfasts leisurely?) A room inspection after breakfast followed and we then boarded the coaches for a 9:45 departure.

A forty-minute drive down the coast bought us to the car park on the opposite side of the bay to Mont St Michel. There we met our guide and prepared for the walk. We took off any footwear and slapped on lots of sun cream. Those with hats wore them (they are easier to spot then if they fall into the quicksand!)

We set at 11:00 with our party of 100 and a further 100 made up of school children and tourists. There were guides at the front, middle and back of the party as we ambled across the vast bay towards the rock.

The sand texture changed many times on the journey. There was sandy sand, squelchy sand, sticky sand, sludgy sand and brownie sand. The brownie sand is like a chocolate brownie - a crisp surface but soft in the middle!

We headed in an arc towards the other rocky island of the bay, Tomblaine. Finally we ended at the foot of Mont St Michel. We headed in and got our rather muddy and sandy feet hosed down. We then headed to the car park where our coaches had driven round and collected our lunch. All were ravenous and ate bread, meat, cheese and fresh fruit. This was all washed down with water and orange juice.

A short toilet break followed where Mr Greenfield negotiated a party rate for the toilets a 'group pee discount'.

We then climbed the 300 or so steps up through the ramparts to the Abbey at the top. The climb was well worth it though as we had commanding views across the bay from the Abbey and its surrounding gardens. Copious photos were taken and then we started the walk down through the narrow streets back to the base. Children compared the narrow streets to Diagon Alley from the Harry Potter films.

A tasty snack of brioche and water followed and then the trip back to Granville. Back at the centre, ice cream was the order of the day. A fantastic dinner followed of pizza, fish, prawns and fresh pineapples.

The evening was spent finishing our diaries and later a disco for those that still had any energy left!

Again the weather has been fantastic today - lots of sun and a light breeze.

Children's Comments

Joe 'I enjoyed the walk across the mud, it squidged all through my toes.

Tomorrow we invade England.

Resting at the Tombelaire rock - about half way.

The narrow streets on the way up to the Abbey. Diagon Alley?
