Friday
June 13th
An 8:00 am breakfast was
followed by the final packing up and loading of the coach. We were
ready in good time and met outside the centre. Gemma and Jack were
chosen to present a signed picture and flowers to our hosts at the
centre. We then boarded the coaches and waved farewell to our home
for the week.
We had a good run to Caen
where we visited the Museum of the Normandy landings. There were
exhibits and also a movie presentation containing original footage
from D Day. We also ate our packed lunch outside the museum.
A short drive up the coast
brought us to the American War Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer where
9,386 American soldiers are buried. The cemetery overlooks the area
that was Omaha beach which now looks calm and inviting, a complete
contrast to 59 years previous. The children acted thoughtfully.
On the way back up the coast we passed a German cemetery where 20,000
soldiers were buried.
We then traveled up through
Normandy to Cherbourg where we ate at McDonalds. We were pushed
for time but still managed to get 90 fed and watered in only 15
minutes!
A short drive then to the
port where we boarded our P&O fastcraft catamaran for Portsmouth.
We had been reserved the front lounge which was great as the whole
party all had comfortable seats. The crew commented on the good
behaviour of the children.
We left Portsmouth at 9:20
and arrived at Horsham at 10:25 having made excellent time. |
