EDUCATION

All children study the National Curriculum subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Art, Design Technology, Geography, History, Information Communication Technology, Religious Education, Music and Physical Education. To complement, extend and enrich the children’s learning they also study Drama, French and Health Education in all their four years at the school. Sex education is delivered within the Health Education policy of the school. Educational visits are an integral part of the school curriculum as well as external groups and speakers who come to Greenway to enrich the curriculum.

For the majority of their education at Greenway boys and girls are taught together in mixed ability, pure aged groups by a class teacher. However for some subjects such as mathematics and language children are grouped within a year by ability. This also happens in science in Years 5 & 6. French is also taught to all children.

Within a class the curriculum is delivered through an appropriate mixture of topic work and separate subject work. There is a clear balance between whole-class teaching, group work and individual work in order to use teaching time most effectively.

There is careful monitoring and assessment of pupil progress to ensure that future planning will challenge, motivate and extend individuals, groups and classes. Formal internal assessments of children are carried out on a regular basis and are available to parents. Each year parents receive a school report detailing the record of progress their child has made.

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

Greenway makes good use of the latest products in the field of Information Communication Technology.

The school is very well resourced with computers. Every classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard. There is a bank of computers set up in one area and two portable ICT suites, one of tablet PCs and the other laptops, which both bring internet access into every classroom through a wireless network. This ensures the children have adequate "hands on" experience. The school is developing a very interactive website.

THE ARTS

In music, drama and art the children are encouraged not only to develop their own individual talents but also to share in the fun and excitement of playing, acting and working with others.

As well as class music, subsidised individual instrumental tuition can be arranged. The school has a flourishing music department and major concerts and productions form part of each year group’s activities.

The school benefits from a large hall with extensive staging and lighting facilities.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The school boasts large playing fields and an outdoor swimming pool. Football, netball, rugby, basketball, hockey, athletics, cricket, table-tennis and swimming are the major sporting activities in which our children take part. Both competitive and friendly matches or tournaments are arranged to enable the children to develop team-building skills and to match their abilities against other children.
